Is Nextracker Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NXT) Recent Stock Performance Tethered To Its Strong Fundamentals?

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 12 18:19

Nextracker's (NASDAQ:NXT) stock is up by a considerable 39% over the past month. Since the market usually pay for a company's long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company's key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. Specifically, we decided to study Nextracker's ROE in this article.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How To Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Nextracker is:

50% = US$496m ÷ US$992m (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

The 'return' is the income the business earned over the last year. So, this means that for every $1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of $0.50.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company's earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

Nextracker's Earnings Growth And 50% ROE

To begin with, Nextracker has a pretty high ROE which is interesting. Secondly, even when compared to the industry average of 12% the company's ROE is quite impressive. Probably as a result of this, Nextracker was able to see a decent net income growth of 15% over the last five years.

We then performed a comparison between Nextracker's net income growth with the industry, which revealed that the company's growth is similar to the average industry growth of 16% in the same 5-year period.
