At the closing bell on the 12th, the number of rising Nikkei average constituent stocks was 51, falling stocks were 170, and unchanged stocks were 4.
On the 11th, the US stock market was mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 38,747.42 (-120.62, -0.31%), the NASDAQ closed at 17,343.55 (+151.02, +0.88%), and the S&P 500 closed at 5,375.32 (+14.53, +0.27%). They fell due to concerns about the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) announcements and traded poorly all day. The Dow Jones fell on concerns about commercial real estate and other sectors as the banking sector weighed heavily on the market, while the NASDAQ rose, supported by Apple’s rise, and steadily rose. The NASDAQ has set a new record high for the second consecutive day.
While US stocks were mixed, the Tokyo market opened with selling pressure ahead of tonight's FOMC statement. After canceling out the rise from the beginning of the week with a decline, it became a stalemate at the 38,800 yen level after position adjustments were rounded. The yield on new 10-year government bonds, which is an indicator of long-term interest rates, fell below 1.000%, which weighed on financial stocks, but with cautious selling during the Japan-US-China central bank meeting week, the Nikkei Average remained stagnant. Trading volume on the prime market was the second-lowest of the year.
At the closing bell, the Nikkei Average was down 258.08 yen (-0.66%) from the previous day at 38,876.71 yen. Trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange prime market was 1,512.7 million shares, with a trading value of 3.3653 trillion yen. Among the sectors, pulp and paper, securities and commodity futures trading, marine transportation, real estate, precision instruments, etc. were all down, while only two sectors, petroleum and coal products and mining, rose. On the prime market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, 37% of stocks rose while 57% fell.
The stock that contributed the most to the decline was First Retail <9983>, which pushed the Nikkei average down by about 100 yen with one stock. Second place was Recruit HD <6098>, followed by Terumo <4543>, Daiichi Sankyo <4568>, Sony Group <6758>, Toyota <7203>, Konami <9766>, etc.
On the other hand, TDK <6762> was the top contributor to the rise and pushed up the Nikkei average by about 35 yen with one stock. Second place was Fanuc Corp <6954>, followed by Nippon Denko <6988>, Disco <6146>, SoftBank Group <9984>, Murata Manufacturing <6981>, Laser Tech <6920>, etc.
