Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "the Company") has agreed with Tree Energy Solutions (hereinafter referred to as "TES") to start a comprehensive joint study (hereinafter referred to as "this study") on e-methane (e-NG) (Note 1) for the transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry by 2050.

The two companies have discussed a partnership related to e-methane, starting with the construction of a value chain for the use of cleaner fuels in maritime transport. Through this study, technical partnerships will be developed to explore the possibility of using e-methane produced by TES as ship fuel, research on system design, and management and operation of e-methane transport ships and liquefied CO2 transport ships for future transport of e-methane and CO2 as raw materials. Both companies also plan to study low-carbon/decarbonized fuels, carbon intensity (Note 2), and systems related to the calculation and certification of CO2 emissions. This study aims to promote the development of e-methane projects and contribute to the transition to sustainable energy.

Comment from Marco Alverà, CEO and Co-Founder of TES:
"This partnership between Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. and TES is an important initiative as the first step towards decarbonization of the maritime sector. By combining TES's expertise in green fuels and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha's efforts to decarbonize, we aim to pave the way for cleaner and more efficient maritime operations and become a global pioneer in the maritime industry."

Comment from Satoshi Kanamori, Executive Officer of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha:
"We will contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality in maritime transport in the coming years. Through our partnership with TES, we will combine our strengths and resources to introduce e-methane and aim to build sustainable maritime and logistics infrastructure."

Our long-term vision on environmental issues, "K"LINE Environmental Vision 2050 - Connecting a Sustainable Future with Blue Oceans (Note 3), sets a goal of "50% improvement" in CO2 emission efficiency from the 2008 level, surpassing the 2030 target set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and aims to challenge net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. As an action plan, we will continue to work on introducing alternative fuels that can reduce environmental impact and strive to achieve our goals.

(Note 1) e-NG (abbreviation for electric natural gas, the name used in Europe and the United States for e-methane)

(Note 2) Calculated by dividing the energy or weight of the fuel by the GHG emissions from the fuel

(Note 3) "K"LINE Environmental Vision 2050 - Connecting a Sustainable Future with Blue Oceans
As an action plan for reducing GHG emissions, we aim to introduce zero-emission fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen, as well as carbon-neutral fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic fuels. (https://www.kline.co.jp/ja/sustainability/environment/management.html)

About TES:
TES is a global green energy company leading e-NG (natural gas derived from green hydrogen) production. Based in Europe, TES is committed to making reliable and affordable green energy available to everyone by implementing large-scale projects. TES produces green hydrogen using solar and wind energy at low cost in North America, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. e-NG is produced by combining this green hydrogen with CO2 and is supplied to various industries, contributing to the solution of global environmental problems.
