Jimmy Carter's Grandson Says Ex-President No Longer Awake Every Day

Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, disclosed that his grandfather's health is deteriorating. The 99-year-old is no longer awake every day, as he continues to receive hospice care at his Georgia home.

What Happened: The eldest of the Carter grandchildren, spoke to Southern Living about his grandfather's condition. The interview, published on Thursday, revealed that the former president is no longer awake every day and his condition fluctuates daily. Carter has been in hospice care for 16 months, reported The Hill.

Jason Carter detailed a recent visit to his grandfather where they watched an Atlanta Braves game together.

"I told him, I said: 'Pawpaw, you know, when people ask me how you're doing I say, 'Honestly, I don't know,'" said Jason Carter. "And he kind of smiled, and he said, 'I don't know, myself.'"

Carter's health has been a cause for concern for some time. In May, Jason Carter had indicated that the former president was "coming to the end" as his health was deteriorating. This was during a mental health forum named after his late grandmother, former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

Rosalynn Carter had herself entered hospice care two days before her passing, which was about 10 months after her husband's hospice care began.

At age 99, Carter is both the longest-lived president and the oldest-living president.

Why It Matters: The Carters have been a symbol of enduring love, with a bond encapsulated by their phrase "ILYTG" — "I love you the goodest." The former president had expressed his profound sense of loss after his wife's passing, highlighting her support and guidance throughout their lives together.

Despite surviving metastatic brain cancer, liver cancer, and numerous health scares, including brain surgery following a fall in 2019, Jimmy Carter entered hospice care in February 2023 after multiple hospital stays. His health has been a topic of concern since then.
