Insider Buyers At Planet Labs PBC Recover Some Losses, But Still Down US$63k

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 11 22:14

Insiders who bought US$269.8k worth of Planet Labs PBC (NYSE:PL) stock in the last year recovered part of their losses as the stock rose by 16% last week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at US$63k since the time of purchase.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Planet Labs PBC

The Co-Founder William Marshall made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$270k worth of shares at a price of US$2.70 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of US$2.07. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was William Marshall.

Insider Ownership Of Planet Labs PBC

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 9.1% of Planet Labs PBC shares, worth about US$55m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
