Possible Bearish Signals With AeroVironment Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 11 18:01

AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVAV) shareholders might have a reason to worry after multiple insiders sold their shares over the last year. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At AeroVironment

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Senior VP & GM of Unmanned Systems, Trace Stevenson, for US$350k worth of shares, at about US$183 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$205, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 43% of Trace Stevenson's stake.
