Summary of the start of the afternoon session

In afternoon trading, the Nikkei Average started slightly higher than the morning closing (39155.16 yen) at 39141.52 yen, up 103.36 yen from the previous day. During lunchtime, the Nikkei 225 futures were stuck in the range of 39130 yen to 39200 yen. The dollar-yen rate has been about 10 yen lower against the yen and higher against the dollar since around 9:00 a.m., at 1 dollar=157.20-30 yen. While the Shanghai Composite Index fell by about 0.9% and is soft in negative territory, the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong has widened its losses, falling by about 1.7% despite its opening decline.

In the afternoon Tokyo market, selling is slightly ahead of the morning closing. This week, there are many events such as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), Bank of Japan monetary policy meeting, release of U.S. price statistics, special clearing index of stock index futures/options for June, and so on, and some investors are cautious about buying while looking for them. On the other hand, the view that the trend of the market is strong has been formed because the Nikkei Average in the morning session moved above the 75-day moving average line, which is located around 39000 yen.

In terms of sectors, oil & coal products, nonferrous metals, and insurance are among the top gainers, while securities, commodity futures/options and air transportation sectors are among top losers.
