On June 11th, Bloomberg reported that Takahiro Mori, vice-chairman of Nippon Steel, met with employees and community leaders of United States Steel last week to better understand the company's proposed acquisition of United States Steel and to see a positive reaction. Mori is the main negotiating representative for United States Steel's trade and seeks to complete the transaction amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and political opposition, as well as opposition from the powerful United Steelworkers union (USW) due to concerns about unemployment. He told Reuters in a recent interview that the world's fourth largest steelmaker hopes to support the deal through public opinion, hoping to bring the union back to the negotiating table. Last month, the two steelmakers announced that they had received regulatory approval from all countries except the United States, and the proposed $14.9 billion merger will take a step closer to completion.
