U.S. stock market rebounded. The Dow Jones rose 69.05 points to close at 38,868.04, and the NASDAQ rose 59.40 points to close at 17,192.53.
With expectations of an early interest rate cut receding, the market fell after opening. At the same time, purchases of high-tech stocks were supported by the expectation of a soft landing, and by expectations of the announcement of new artificial intelligence (AI) features for Apple's mobile devices and helped the market rise. Although there is a strong wait-and-see mood with the release of the consumer price index (CPI) and the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) scheduled for this week, the market maintained a positive tone, with NASDAQ hitting a new all-time high. Among the sectors, utilities and retail rose, while technology hardware and equipment fell.
Semiconductor company Nvidia (NVDA) rose on the day of its stock split implementation, increasing its shares from 1 to 10. Southwest Airlines (LUV), a low-cost airline company, rose after investor Elliott Management announced the purchase of $1.9 billion worth of company shares. Energy resource company Occidental Petroleum (OXY) rose after it was revealed in a regulatory filing that Berkshire Hathaway (BRK), owned by renowned investor Buffett, had purchased additional shares of the company. Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly (LLY) rose on news that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the company's Alzheimer's treatment is effective.
Discount retailer Walmart (WMT) rose as analysts raised their investment rating. Semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) fell as investor sentiment turned negative after analysts lowered their investment rating. Apple (AAPL) fell due to profit-taking selling, despite announcing new artificial intelligence (AI) features called "Apple Intelligence" in partnership with non-profit research institution OpenAI at the World Developers Conference (WWDC).
The VIX index, which reflects investor fear, fell to 12.62.
