Recently, the six ministries of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, and the National Energy Administration's Comprehensive Department officially announced the list of national green data centers for 2023. GDS Holdings Pujiang Data Center was successfully selected as the national green data center in the Internet field, and the company has been on the list for three consecutive years.
GDS Holdings Pujiang Data Center is located in Minhang District, Shanghai, with a total construction area of nearly 90,000 square meters. It was put into operation at the end of 2021. It is the first newly-built project in Shanghai that supports energy consumption indicators. It is also the first data center in East China that practices green energy-saving and fine management of digital information. It mainly provides high-performance computing services for digital finance, trade, and Internet industries.
According to the evaluation requirements for national green data centers, GDS Holdings Pujiang Data Center continuously optimizes various key energy efficiency indicators of the data center by investing and practicing in improving the proportion of renewable energy use, AI-comprehensive efficiency, strengthening intelligent operation and management, innovative application of liquid cooling and other technologies, and integration of production, education, research and development.
Improving the proportion of renewable energy use: The Pujiang Data Center Park has a distributed photovoltaic system with a total installed capacity of 243.1 kWp, with an annual power generation capacity of 238,000 kWh. Combined with green electricity procurement and green certificate transactions, it has maintained a 100% renewable energy utilization rate since 2022, achieving zero-carbon operation.
AI comprehensively improves operational efficiency: GDS Holdings insists on using AI algorithms to comprehensively upgrade the operational efficiency of data centers. Pujiang Data Center has established an energy efficiency log management system platform that can monitor energy consumption in real time through AI technology and innovatively applies AI technology to the BA control system.
Strengthening intelligent operation and management: Pujiang Data Center has launched the GDS Holdings' Global Operations Command Center (GOCC) national energy dual-control platform, equipped with a dedicated energy efficiency expert position, to achieve comprehensive, automated, refined, and efficient control of various infrastructure operations.
Promoting innovative technology application through the integration of industry, education, and research: GDS Holdings has established long-term strategic cooperation relationships with major scientific research institutes such as Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Based on the special research and development of plate-type liquid cooling technology with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Pujiang Data Center has applied the innovative design of the liquid cooling system to achieve frequency conversion control of the cooling tower.
Continuous upgrading and transformation of energy-saving technology: GDS Holdings continues to upgrade and transform the equipment systems of the Pujiang Data Center's power distribution, refrigeration, water treatment, waste heat and waste cold recovery, etc., further improving energy efficiency and achieving energy recycling.
The Pujiang Data Center (Building 2) that participated in the evaluation achieved 100% green power coverage in 2023 and an average annual PUE of 1.27. The WUE is 0.995L/kWh, and the annual utilization of waste heat and cold is 245,000 kWh. It has become a demonstration project for GDS Holdings' green and energy-saving. It has won honors such as the “Data Center Full-cycle Low-carbon and Net-zero Emissions Demonstration”, “Lingang Group Park Leader”, and “2022 China IDC Industry Green Computing Data Center”.
Recently, GDS Holdings' Pujiang Data Center was successfully selected for the "Top Ten Outstanding Cases of Waste Heat Utilization in Shanghai" initiated and organized by the Shanghai Economic and Information Commission and the Shanghai Energy Efficiency Center with its "cold water waste heat recovery and heating project," actively responding to the requirements of documents such as the "Shanghai Industrial Sector Carbon Peak Implementation Plan" and the "Shanghai Industrial and Communications Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction "One Hundred and One" Action Plan (2022-2025).
GDS Holdings has always attached great importance to green and sustainable development. In 2022, the company's data center achieved the best average annual PUE of 1.15, and the proportion of renewable energy use increased to 35.9%.
