At the China Taipei Computer Show, several upstream chipmakers showcased new technologies. ARM claimed it will capture over 50% market share in the Windows PC market within the next five years.

On June 5th, according to "Star Daily News", COMPUTEX officially opened. The event became a concentrated display platform for the latest AI PC products and technologies. Upstream and downstream enterprises in the PC field, including well-known listed companies in chip design and manufacturing, whole-machine and OEM fields, structural components and other sectors, gathered together.

Industry giants such as NVIDIA, AMD, Qualcomm, Intel, etc., have all demonstrated cutting-edge solutions. At the event, MediaTek released two mobile computing chips that will be used for Google Chromebook, marking MediaTek’s official entry into the AI PC market. ARM CEO Rene Haas announced that by the end of 2025, more than 100 billion ARM devices will have the ability to run AI applications, and ARM plans to capture over 50% market share in the Windows PC market within the next five years. ARM stated that it will focus on the AI capability and security of next-generation PCs.

Some industry insiders believe that with the release of AI PC chips for two mobile chip companies, coupled with Apple's previously-released M-series chips, an opportunity for new competition has emerged in the AI PC market, bringing new opportunities for the industry.

Intel and AMD have launched next-generation AI PC chips.

Prior to the opening of COMPUTEX in China Taipei, Microsoft announced the latest exploration of the AI PC field at the 2024 Build Developer's Preview – 'Copilot+PC'. Subsequently, NVIDIA announced that its RTX series graphics card will strongly support Microsoft's new Copilot+ program, indicating that Copilot+PC will become the new standard for Windows camp AI PC products this year.

AMD released a brand new Zen 5 CPU architecture and launched two series of PC chips based on this architecture. The Ryzen AI 300 series for notebook computers fully supports AI PC products, while the Ryzen 9000 series processors are launched for desktops.

The Ryzen AI 300 series chip integrates an independent NPU AI engine and GPU core. The NPU uses the all-new XDNA 2 architecture and introduces the all-new Block FP16 floating-point precision technology, further enhancing performance. The two high-end products in this series, Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and 365, are positioned in the high-end market.

It is reported that notebook computers equipped with the Ryzen AI 300 chip will be launched in July. At present, there are more than 100 designs, covering major OEM brands such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and MSI.

At this year's COMPUTEX, Intel’s latest generation of notebook processors Lunar Lake use a configuration of 4 performance cores (P cores) matched with 4 efficiency cores (E cores) and combines three architecture upgrades, significantly improving Lunar Lake's computing power with 120 TOPS, where 48 TOPS come from the NPU, 67 TOPS come from the GPU, and approximately 5 TOPS come from the CPU.

Intel stated that Lunar Lake's design goal is to create a highly efficient SoC (system-level chip) to meet the needs of the next-generation AI PC platform, namely the Copilot+PC.

Reporters from the Star Daily News learned that more than 80 products from more than 20 manufacturers are expected to be launched with the Lunar Lake processor in the first quarter of this year, with mass sales to begin in the fourth quarter. In addition, Intel has also launched an AI PC development kit equipped with this chip so that developers can fine-tune the chip and develop new AI PC experiences.

In addition to traditional x86 chip suppliers, mobile chip giants such as Qualcomm and MediaTek have also found new opportunities in the PC field with generative AI technology.

According to Canalys analyst Ye Maosheng: "The power advantages provided by the ARM architecture processor have a significant impact on the future high-performance AI era."

Qualcomm CEO Amoen said in his speech: "The entire Copilot+PC system with Snapdragon X Elite integrated AI can bring battery life lasting for days."

For the AI PC product, Qualcomm released the Snapdragon X Elite in October 2023 and launched the XPlus series in April this year. The first 20 products with these two series are expected to be officially sold to consumers after June 18.

Amoen also told Star Daily News reporters: "NPU is the key differentiation factor. Moving AI workloads from CPU and GPU to NPU can not only significantly improve performance but also reduce power consumption. In terms of watt performance, our performance is 2.6 times higher than Apple's M3 and 5.4 times higher than Intel Core Ultra 7."

MediaTek also released the Kompanio 838 chipset targeted towards high-end Chromebooks and the Pentonic 800 intelligent TV chipset targeted at 4K high-end smart TVs and display devices at this year's COMPUTEX. Kompanio 838 uses an eight-core architecture that provides all-day battery life for lightweight Chromebook products.

Google ChromeOS Vice President John Solomon believes that Kompanio 838's feature is its balance between performance and power consumption, which can provide practical AI functions for Chromebooks.

According to Counterpoint, Qualcomm and MediaTek's solutions are expected to achieve a year-on-year growth of over 50% on Arm laptops in 2024-2025. By the end of 2027, ARM is expected to hold about 25% of the laptop market share.

Industrial chain enterprises embrace new opportunities.

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said: "The PC is being reshaped, which will change consumers' expectations of devices in terms of productivity, creativity, communication, and entertainment. Last month, we announced the launch of Copilot+ PC—so far the fastest and smartest Windows PC, marking a turning point for the entire industry."

Minsheng Securities pointed out in a recent research report that with the rapid development of AI hardware terminal technology, 2024 is expected to become the first year of AI PC. The rise of AI PC is expected to further expand the application scenarios of PC and drive a new round of market growth.

IDC predicts that with the arrival of AI PC, the Chinese PC market will experience growth. It is expected that the shipment of desktop and laptop computers in China will reach 46.874 million units this year, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.61%.

Currently, the AI PC industry chain covers various segments such as whole machines, structural components, and so on. At the Taipei Computer Show, companies in the AI PC industry chain such as Yidao Information and Zhimi Intelligent, whole machine and OEM enterprises, and companies in the structural component subdivisions participated in the exhibition.

Mainstream PC manufacturers such as Lenovo, HP, Asus, Dell, Acer, and Samsung have all chosen to launch computers based on both x86 and ARM architectures at this computer show.

Zhimi Intelligent told reporters from "Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily" that the company has cooperated with Intel to release a green AI all-in-one machine jointly developed by the company, Tsinghua Tongfang, and TCL Huaxing. This machine will be equipped with the Meteor Lake Ultra series platform processor.
