The U.S. stock market rose on the 4th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session at 38,711.29 dollars, up 140.26 dollars (+0.36%), the Nasdaq rose 28.38 points (+0.17%) to 16,857.05, and the S&P 500 rose 7.94 points (+0.15%) to 5,291.34. Although US stocks rose, the Tokyo market started trading with a dominant selling sentiment due to concerns about the appreciation of the yen in the foreign exchange market. The Nikkei average expanded its decline to 38,343.98 yen after the start of trading. After a round of selling, it avoided further drop, supported by the rise of real estate stocks due to favorable interest rate declines. However, it still closed below the 25-day moving average.
At the closing bell, the Nikkei average fell by 347.29 yen (-0.89%) from the previous day to 38,490.17 yen. The trading volume on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 1.717 billion shares, with a trading value of 4.6242 trillion yen. Among the sectors, insurance, mining, iron and steel, marine transportation, nonferrous metals, etc. declined, while pharmaceuticals, real estate, information and communication, electric and gas utilities, and precision instruments rose. The ratio of gaining stocks to losing stocks in the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 22% to 75%.
The top negative contributions were made by Tokyo Electron <8035>, which pushed down the Nikkei average by about 90 yen with one stock. The second place was Recruit Holdings <6098>, followed by Laser Tech <6920>, Advantest <6857>, KDDI <9433>, Fanuc <6954>, and Toyota <7203> etc.
On the other hand, the top positive contributions were made by Softbank Group <9984>, which pushed up the Nikkei average by about 81 yen with one stock. The second place was Fast Retailing <9983>, followed by Terumo <4543>, Daiichi Sankyo <4568>, Olympus <7733>, Nitori Holdings <9843>, and Eisai <4523> etc.
