The Zhitong Finance app learned that Disney (DIS.US) launched streaming Disney+ yesterday. Within just 24 hours, the company announced that Disney+ has 10 million subscribers, a “jaw-dropping” figure. This figure is far higher than many Wall Street analysts had anticipated.
Disney did not immediately respond to questions about whether the 10 million sign-ups included pre-sales. Additionally, Verizon is offering customers a free year of Disney+, which will further increase its number of subscribers.
In contrast, rivals such as Netflix (NFLX.US) and Hulu took years to attract more viewers. It took CBS (CBS.US) about five years to reach 8 million subscribers. However, Disney+ has yet to launch in countries other than the US, Canada, and the Netherlands.
Disney+ will launch in Australia and New Zealand on November 19, and over the next few months, more regions will be able to use Disney's streaming service.
By Wednesday's close, Disney's stock was up more than 7%, while Netflix's stock was down more than 3%.
