Asia Markets Slide, Europe Advances, While Crude Oil Falls Below $80 Again - Global Markets Today While US Slept

On Wednesday, May 29th, U.S. stock markets closed in red as the U.S. stocks Wednesday amid rising Treasury yields and uncertainty over Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. The Dow fell over 1%, hitting a nearly one-month low.

According to the economic data, the Dallas Fed's business activity index for Texas' service sector fell to -12.1 in May from -10.6 in April.

All S&P 500 sectors ended lower, with rate-sensitive utilities experiencing some of the steepest declines.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.06% and closed at 38,441.54. The S&P 500 declined 0.74%, ending the day at 5,266.95, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.58%, finishing the session at 16,920.58.

  • On Thursday, Japan's Nikkei 225 declined 1.32%, ending the session at 38,012.50, led by losses in the Marine Transport, Manufacturing, and Fishery sectors.
  • Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index closed lower by 0.49% at 7,628.20, led by losses in the Gold, Metals & Mining and Resources sectors.
  • India's Nifty 50 was down 0.95% at 22,488.65, and the Nifty 500 closed lower by 1.02% at 21,038.55.
  • China's Shanghai Composite was down 0.62%, ending the session at 3,091.68, and the Shenzhen CSI slid 0.53%, closing at 3,594.31.
  • China's Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 and Shanghai Composite indexes fell after a 20% rally due to profit-taking, U.S.-China trade concerns, and uncertainty about Beijing's stimulus measures.
  • Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended the session lower by 1.34% at 18,230.19.

  • The European STOXX 50 index was up 0.05%.
  • Germany's DAX declined 0.03%.
  • France's CAC rose 0.19%.
  • U.K.'s FTSE 100 traded higher by 0.27%.

  • Crude Oil WTI was trading lower by 0.38% at $78.93/bbl, and Brent was down 0.42% at $83.08 bbl.
  • Natural Gas declined 0.86% to $2.643.
  • Gold was trading lower by 0.44% at $2,353.50; Silver fell 2.43% to $31.587, while Copper was down 2.34% to $4.6787.

US Futures at 06:00 AM ET

Dow futures were down 0.85%, S&P 500 futures fell 0.44%, and Nasdaq 100 Futures slid 0.42%.

Forex at 06:00 AM ET

The U.S. Dollar Index declined 0.16% to 104.47, USD/JPY was down 0.39% at 157.00, and USD/AUD slid 0.04% to 1.5123.
