The amount of European bonds issued since this year has surpassed the 1 trillion euro (1.1 trillion US dollars) mark, more than a week before reaching this record. Relevant data shows that the region's publicly syndicated bond issuance scale reached this milestone on Wednesday, supported by Spain's issuance of 10 billion euro bonds. This broke the record set on June 9, 2020, when the government and companies strengthened their balance sheets in the first few months of the pandemic. Nearly half of the bonds issued this year came from supranational countries, governments, and institutions. However, as the ECB begins implementing monetary easing as soon as next month, it is expected that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged, and a number of US companies are seeking to take advantage of the widening yield gap. “Issuers have always been keen to lock in financing with relatively narrow spreads,” said Marc Lewell, head of J.P. Morgan's EMEA and APAC syndicate business. “The supply from US issuers will definitely increase during 2024.”
