Does Afya (NASDAQ:AFYA) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Simply Wall St ·  May 29 21:58

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Afya (NASDAQ:AFYA). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Afya Growing?

Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. It certainly is nice to see that Afya has managed to grow EPS by 19% per year over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Afya remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 20% to R$3.0b. That's encouraging news for the company!

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Afya shares worth a considerable sum. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth R$454m. That equates to 28% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Looking very optimistic for investors.

Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in Afya's continuing strength. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow.
