36Kr Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:KRKR) Stock Catapults 29% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  May 29 19:41

The 36Kr Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:KRKR) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 29%. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 50% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, 36Kr Holdings may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.4x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How 36Kr Holdings Has Been Performing

The recent revenue growth at 36Kr Holdings would have to be considered satisfactory if not spectacular. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders may have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for 36Kr Holdings, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

36Kr Holdings' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 5.5% gain to the company's revenues. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen an unpleasant 12% overall drop in revenue. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 13% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that 36Kr Holdings' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Bottom Line On 36Kr Holdings' P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift 36Kr Holdings' P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of 36Kr Holdings revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
