Have Insiders Sold Group 1 Automotive Shares Recently?

Simply Wall St ·  May 26 20:27

Some Group 1 Automotive, Inc. (NYSE:GPI) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the Senior VP & CFO, Daniel McHenry, recently sold a substantial US$755k worth of stock at a price of US$310 per share. However, that sale only accounted for 9.8% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

Group 1 Automotive Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CEO, President & Director, Daryl Kenningham, for US$2.5m worth of shares, at about US$263 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$308. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 18% of Daryl Kenningham's holding.

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Group 1 Automotive insiders own 2.3% of the company, worth about US$94m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
