On Thursday,$Tesla (TSLA.US)$The Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory, located in Shanghai's Lingang New Area, has officially started construction. The plant will produce Megapack commercial energy storage batteries hailed as a “landmark project” by the American automaker.
According to the Management Committee of the Lingang New Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the new plant covers an area of about 200,000 square meters, with a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan (about 203.94 million US dollars).
According to reports, this is Tesla's first energy storage gigafactory outside the mainland of the US, and it is also the company's second factory in Shanghai. The energy storage gigafactory is expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025. After commissioning, Megapack, a large-scale electrochemical commercial energy storage system, will produce 10,000 units, and the energy storage scale is nearly 40 gigawatt-hours.
In an interview, Tesla Global Vice President Tao Lin said, “I believe the new plant is a milestone for both Shanghai and Tesla.”
She added, “In a more open environment, we can create new Tesla speeds at the Megapack factory and supply large Chinese-made energy storage batteries to the global market.”
