A new path for publishers

The rise of generative artificial intelligence tools could transform the publishing industry. More and more people in the industry are concerned about the impact of artificial intelligence on newsroom work.

However, at present, artificial intelligence models also require large amounts of information to “feed”, so AI companies are eager to obtain content from publishers, because this content can help them improve models and create new products such as artificial intelligence search; and publishers are also trying to ensure that they receive high compensation from their intellectual property rights.

This collaboration between News Corp and OpenAI is the latest example of publishers seeking new solutions under the rise of generative artificial intelligence. Currently, more and more publishers have cooperated with OpenAI, including Politico, Axel Springer, Associated Press, Le Monde, Financial Times, etc.

Just last Thursday (May 16), OpenAI also announced a collaboration with the social network Reddit to allow OpenAI to train its artificial intelligence models on Reddit content. As part of the deal, OpenAI will gain access to Reddit's data application programming interface (API), which will provide Reddit's real-time, structured, and unique content; at the same time, Reddit will begin providing users and moderators with certain artificial intelligence features based on the OpenAI model, and OpenAI will become Reddit's advertising partner.

Additionally, last week, OpenAI launched the latest artificial intelligence model and the desktop version of ChatGPT — GPT-4O, and updated the user interface. Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati (Mira Murati) said during a live event last week that the update brings exclusive GPT-4 to every user, including free users of OpenAI..

The new GPT-4o is faster than the previous version, and has improved text, video, and audio capabilities. OpenAI said its ultimate plan is to enable users to video chat with ChatGPT.
