Earnings Tell The Story For Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS)

Simply Wall St ·  May 23 03:27

There wouldn't be many who think Masco Corporation's (NYSE:MAS) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 16.8x is worth a mention when the median P/E in the United States is similar at about 17x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

Recent times have been pleasing for Masco as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Masco's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Some Growth For Masco?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Masco's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 15%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 42% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 8.1% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

With this information, we can see why Masco is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on while the company is keeping a low profile.

The Final Word

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Masco maintains its moderate P/E off the back of its forecast growth being in line with the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings won't throw up any surprises. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.

It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for Masco that you need to take into consideration.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking at a few good candidates. So take a peek at this free list of companies with a strong growth track record, trading on a low P/E.
