A Novo Nordisk spokesperson later said that a fire broke out outside the company's Bagswade office building. The fire department was putting out the fire and that the fire started was not a production facility.
According to reports, the office building that caught fire was a “fairly large multi-storey building,” and the crowd in the surrounding buildings had already been evacuated. After more than three hours of hard work, the fire has now been brought under control, but it will take some time to completely extinguish the flames, and the risk of the building collapsing has slowed down the fire extinguishing work.
According to the Copenhagen Fire Service, about 100 firefighters participated in the fire fighting operation, and they used drones to put out the fire. A Novo Nordisk spokesperson said the smoke from Wednesday's fire was not toxic, and no one was injured.
The spokesperson also claimed that the headquarters building was not affected and that all activities in the affected areas are expected to return to normal tomorrow, so production will not be affected.
Local police said in a post on X that smoke billowing from the fire site affected visibility of the nearby Hillerod Expressway. Nearby residents were advised to stay indoors and close their windows.
Just last week, Novo Nordisk's Danish production center in Kalundborg also caught fire. The company is spending more than $6 billion to increase production at the Kalundborg production center to meet growing consumer demand. “We are optimistic that this will not affect production progress.”
With the world's best-selling diet pills and diabetes drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, Novo Nordisk has become the company with the highest market capitalization in Europe, and the Danish pharmaceutical company is currently investing heavily to expand in Denmark and overseas.
As Novo Nordisk grew larger, every move it made received close attention from the media, especially changes in production capacity and price of diet pills.
Christoph Ellersgaard, a professor at the Copenhagen Business School, said Novo Nordisk has received “extreme political attention” and that if the company continues to expand, its influence in Denmark will continue to expand.
