Myriad Genetics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MYGN) Shares Bounce 26% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry

Simply Wall St ·  May 11 21:38

Myriad Genetics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MYGN) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 43% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, Myriad Genetics may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 12.5x and even P/S higher than 66x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Myriad Genetics' Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times haven't been great for Myriad Genetics as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Myriad Genetics' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 11% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 37% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 8.0% per annum during the coming three years according to the eleven analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 210% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Myriad Genetics' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Myriad Genetics' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Myriad Genetics maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
