Google Rolls Out ChromeOS Update With Faster Split Screen And Better Connectivity Management

Benzinga ·  May 3 21:50

Alphabet Inc.'s Google is rolling out ChromeOS M124, a significant upgrade for Chromebooks, introducing new features and performance improvements.

What Happened: The ChromeOS Settings app has been redesigned to resemble an Android tablet app, with each section now opening in its container, a departure from the previous continuous feed of preferences, 9to5Google reported on Friday.

Google has added a new option called "Wallpaper and style" and made a few changes to "System preferences."

The new ChromeOS M124 update has also introduced a faster Split Screen Setup and a Quality of Service (QoS) feature, which promises better traffic prioritization for video conferencing and gaming applications on congested Wi-Fi networks.

Fast Pair now supports mice, prompting users to pair the accessory when brought close to the Chromebook. Additionally, users can now increase the size of their cursor, a feature that can be accessed under Settings > Accessibility > Cursor and touchpad.

Why It Matters: Google's Chromebook line has been steadily evolving, with the company focusing on enhancing productivity and user experience.

In October, Google launched the $399 Chromebook Plus, a budget-friendly computing solution with basic productivity features. The ChromeOS 124 upgrade is a continuation of this trend, introducing features designed to improve the user experience and enhance productivity.

In December 2023, Google Chrome was updated with a slew of security and performance improvements, including proactive alerts from Safety Check for compromised passwords and potentially harmful extensions. The new ChromeOS 124 continues this focus on security and performance, introducing a Quality of Service feature designed to improve video conferencing and gaming experiences on congested networks.
