The American Advisory Council Consumer Confidence Index declined for the third month in a row in April from 103.1 after a downward revision in March to 97.0. Despite three consecutive months of decline, the index remained stable for more than two years, fluctuating horizontally in a relatively narrow range. The current status index fell from 146.8 after the March revision to 142.9. The expected index fell to 66.4 from 74.0 revised in March. Expectations below 80 usually indicate an impending recession. Dana M. Peterson, chief economist at the council, said: “As consumer optimism about the current labor market situation declined and concerns about future business conditions, jobs, and income increased, the confidence index fell further back to its lowest level since July 2022.”
