$Microsoft (MSFT.US)$After strong performance growth in the first quarter, bet more on artificial intelligence. On Tuesday, after meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that it will invest 1.7 billion US dollars to develop artificial intelligence in Indonesia.
Nadella announced that the investment will be completed within four years, and its promise will help train 2.5 million people in Southeast Asia to enter the AI industry, while 840,000 people in the Indonesian market will participate in this process.
In addition to Indonesia, Nadella will also visit Thailand and Malaysia, which highlights the popularity of the Southeast Asian market internationally in recent years. Many Silicon Valley giants, including Microsoft, Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia, have emphasized the region's importance to its international layout.
Go both ways
Artificial intelligence has become Microsoft's main agenda, and it is in a battle with rivals such as Google and Meta for AI dominance. Microsoft's advantage is that it joined forces with OpenAI, the cutting edge in the field of artificial intelligence, to participate in this challenge.
Microsoft has created a series of artificial intelligence products through collaboration with OpenAI and integrated them into Microsoft's existing product system. Meanwhile, Microsoft is also investing heavily in expanding its global data center network to meet growing demand for artificial intelligence services — its capital expenditure for the third fiscal quarter reached $14 billion.
Indonesia has selected Bali and the country's new capital, Nusantara, as potential locations for Microsoft's research and data center in the country, the country's Minister of Information and Communications, Budi Arie Setiadi, said on Tuesday.
He added that Microsoft's cooperation with Indonesia is critical to achieving the “Golden Indonesia Vision 2045”. This partnership will open up new horizons for Indonesia, making it not only a consumer of technology, but also a key contributor to the global AI supply chain.
Nadella said in a statement that a new generation of artificial intelligence is reshaping the way people live and work around the world. Microsoft's investment in Indonesia will cover digital infrastructure, skills, and support for developers, which will help Indonesia thrive in the new era.
According to Kearney's research, artificial intelligence will contribute nearly $1 trillion to Southeast Asia's GDP by 2030, of which Indonesia alone is expected to contribute 366 billion US dollars.
