Possible Bearish Signals With Teradata Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 26 20:51

Many Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Teradata

The insider, Todd Cione, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.9m worth of shares at a price of US$45.00 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$37.61. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Teradata insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Teradata Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Teradata shares. In total, insiders sold US$1.9m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Insider Ownership Of Teradata

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 0.9% of Teradata shares, worth about US$31m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Teradata Insiders?

Insiders haven't bought Teradata stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But it is good to see that Teradata is growing earnings. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We're in no rush to buy! So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company. While conducting our analysis, we found that Teradata has 1 warning sign and it would be unwise to ignore this.
