Earnings Growth of 3.0% Over 5 Years Hasn't Been Enough to Translate Into Positive Returns for OraSure Technologies (NASDAQ:OSUR) Shareholders

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 17 20:05

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But in any portfolio, there will be mixed results between individual stocks. At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in OraSure Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSUR), since the last five years saw the share price fall 45%. And some of the more recent buyers are probably worried, too, with the stock falling 22% in the last year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 36% in the last 90 days.

If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for OraSure Technologies isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

OraSure Technologies became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

Revenue is actually up 26% over the time period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. This free report showing analyst forecasts should help you form a view on OraSure Technologies

A Different Perspective

Investors in OraSure Technologies had a tough year, with a total loss of 22%, against a market gain of about 22%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 8% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand OraSure Technologies better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for OraSure Technologies (of which 1 is concerning!) you should know about.
