Former Trump Adviser Peter Navarro Appeals To Supreme Court To Avoid Further Jail Time

Benzinga ·  Apr 3 22:02

In a recent development, former adviser to Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, has approached the Supreme Court in an attempt to evade further imprisonment.

What Happened: Navarro submitted a request on Tuesday, asking the Supreme Court to reconsider his plea to avoid jail time, CNN reported on Tuesday. This action follows the denial of Navarro's initial emergency request by Chief Justice John Roberts on Mar. 18, which resulted in Navarro's subsequent imprisonment.

Having already served 15 days of his four-month sentence, Navarro is now appealing to Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first nominee to the court, to review his request. Such requests are rarely granted.

Navarro's legal team had previously argued that a pause on the lower court's ruling rejecting Navarro's bid to avoid prison was justified, as Navarro was not a flight risk and was raising significant legal questions.

Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of failing to respond to congressional subpoenas for documents and testimony in the investigation of the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack.

Why It Matters: Navarro's legal troubles began in September, when he was found guilty on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress for not responding to a subpoena from a House Committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill riots.

Navarro began serving his sentence at a federal correctional facility in Miami in March. His current appeal to the Supreme Court is a continuation of his attempts to avoid serving the full term of his sentence.
