IQVIA Holdings Inc.'s (NYSE:IQV) Business Is Yet to Catch Up With Its Share Price

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 3 20:38

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider IQVIA Holdings Inc. (NYSE:IQV) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 32.9x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

IQVIA Holdings certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as IQVIA Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 27% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 412% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 12% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

In light of this, it's curious that IQVIA Holdings' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From IQVIA Holdings' P/E?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that IQVIA Holdings currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the relatively high share price as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for IQVIA Holdings you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
