SIGA Technologies, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SIGA) Shares Leap 34% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 14 20:13

SIGA Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:SIGA) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 34% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 15% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, SIGA Technologies may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.7x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 32x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been pleasing for SIGA Technologies as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is SIGA Technologies' Growth Trending?

SIGA Technologies' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 105% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 35% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 16% during the coming year according to the only analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that SIGA Technologies is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On SIGA Technologies' P/E

Even after such a strong price move, SIGA Technologies' P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that SIGA Technologies currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
