Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) has seven of the top 10 selling smartphone models by units shipped.

Here were the top 10 smartphone models by market share in 2023, according to Counterpoint Research.

  1. iPhone 14: 3.9%
  2. iPhone 14 Pro Max: 2.8%
  3. iPhone 14 Pro: 2.4%
  4. iPhone 13: 2.2%
  5. iPhone 15 Pro Max: 1.7%
  6. iPhone 15 Pro: 1.4%
  7. iPhone 15: 1.4%
  8. Galaxy A14 5G: 1.4%
  9. Galaxy A04e: 1.3%
  10. Galaxy A14 4G: 1.3%

The findings are in line with a previous report from analytics firm Canalys.

The list includes three different models, or versions, of the iPhone. According to both firms — Canalys and Counterpoint — Apple dominates the list with the top seven smartphone models.

Samsung (OTC:SSNLF), which Apple passed as the top smartphone shipper globally, had three smartphones on the Counterpoint list. The models ranked eighth, ninth, and 10th.

Apple unveiled and released its first iPhone in 2017. Since then, the Cupertino, California-based company has become one of the leading smartphone makers globally.

Newly released iPhone models see old iPhone users switch to the newest model. Or, in some cases, customers from other brands making the switch to Apple.

In 2023, Apple passed Samsung and ended the company's 13-year streak atop the smartphone global units list.

The iPhone 13 ranked fourth on the list, despite being released in September 2021. The pone was popular in India and Japan according to the report. India passed the 10 million smartphone milestone for the first time in 2023, one of five countries to hit the mark.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 made up six spots on the list with the Pro and Pro Max more expensive models ranking well, which could highlight the average sale price potential Apple has as users look for premium smartphone models with more capabilities and functions.

Released in September 2023, the iPhone 15 having several models on the list with only around three months of time on the market shows the strength of the newest model. The iPhone 15 Pro Max was the top selling smartphone globally in the fourth quarter according to the report.

The list illustrates that Apple can continue to release a new model annually with demand from users and older models will also continue to sell well with lower prices.

Together, the top 10 smartphones sold in 2023 made up 20% market share globally, which set a new record. Apple and Samsung dominated the list and have been the only two companies on the annual list from Counterpoint since 2021.

AAPL Price Action: Apple shares trade at $181.14 versus a 52-week trading range of $143.90 to $199.62 and are up 22% over the last year.
