Beijing New Space Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:605178) Shares May Have Slumped 45% But Getting In Cheap Is Still Unlikely

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 13 06:40

The Beijing New Space Technology Co., Ltd. (SHSE:605178) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 45%. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 42% share price drop.

Even after such a large drop in price, when almost half of the companies in China's Construction industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may still consider Beijing New Space Technology as a stock not worth researching with its 6x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Beijing New Space Technology Has Been Performing

For instance, Beijing New Space Technology's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Beijing New Space Technology, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Beijing New Space Technology would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 54%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 81% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Beijing New Space Technology's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

What Does Beijing New Space Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Beijing New Space Technology's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Beijing New Space Technology currently trades on a much higher than expected P/S since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
