Despite Lower Earnings Than Three Years Ago, Sunway (SHSE:603333) Investors Are up 13% Since Then

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 25 08:52

Sunway Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603333) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 11% in the last week. But that shouldn't obscure the pleasing returns achieved by shareholders over the last three years. In fact, the company's share price bested the return of its market index in that time, posting a gain of 13%.

In light of the stock dropping 11% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive three-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, Sunway moved from a loss to profitability. So we would expect a higher share price over the period.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

While it's never nice to take a loss, Sunway shareholders can take comfort that their trailing twelve month loss of 3.2% wasn't as bad as the market loss of around 21%. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it's worse than the annualised loss of 0.2% over the last half decade. Whilst Baron Rothschild does tell the investor "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", buyers would need to examine the data carefully to be comfortable that the business itself is sound. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Sunway better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Sunway you should be aware of, and 2 of them can't be ignored.
