Revenue sharing standards have yet to be determined.

Will ChatGPT become a full-featured app like WeChat and DingTalk?

On January 10th, OpenAI's app store GPT Store was officially launched, with a full range of categories, trends, and weekly selections.

Like most app stores, GPT Store includes community leaderboards for popular downloads, and users can search by category such as writing, lifestyle, and education.

OpenAI Greg Brockman said this was the first step in building his own ChatGPT. The product is still experimental, but we hope to roll it out more widely in the coming weeks.

OpenAI will also be highlighting useful and influential features of GPT each week. The first batch of featured GPTs include:

  • AllTrails with personalized trail suggestions

  • Consensus, which can search and analyze results from 200 million academic papers

  • Code Tutor created by Khan Academy to help you improve your coding skills

  • Canva to help design presentations or social posts

  • Books to help you find your next book

  • CK-12 Flexi AI Assistant to help you learn math and science anytime, anywhere

Since the GPT Builder program was announced last November, users have created more than 3 million robots (known as GPT).

Until now, only users subscribed to the OpenAI paid plan were able to create and use custom GPTs. This is an attempt by OpenAI with ChatGPT's large user base.

Before that, OpenAI allowed people to create their own GPTS, but everyone was only able to share GPTS through the tedious process of copying and pasting URLs. That will now change somewhat. According to several GPTS creators, OpenAI told developers on January 4: “We wanted to let everyone know that we will launch the GPT Store next week.”

This is a bit later than OpenAI's original planned launch date of November 2023, and the company has already experienced a wave of CEO Sam Altman being fired and re-hired.

OpenAI also announced that it will launch a revenue sharing program with GPT creators in the first quarter of this year. GPT creators will be paid based on how much users interact with the chatbot, but OpenAI hasn't shared actual details, such as how to calculate payments based on a specific formula: How do you measure engagement? What if the user just starts using it then doesn't like it and turns it off after a few seconds? Does this count towards participation in this GPT? Is this the only way to measure user engagement?

App store operators such as Apple and Google usually take a portion of app store revenue for themselves, usually 30%. How OpenAI draws what remains to be seen. “Revenue sharing is very important,” Altman said at a press conference announcing GPTS in November last year. “We're going to pay a portion of the revenue to those who have built the most useful GPT”.

Seen this way, the OpenAI GPT Store is slightly different from Apple's App Store model (where third-party developers can choose to price their apps), and it looks more like Spotify, where artists get paid from Spotify according to Spotify's formula for paying for each app.

OpenAI said that prior to the opening of the GPT Store, it established a new review system to ensure that customized GPTS complied with its brand guidelines and usage policies. It also updated instructions on how to report harmful or unsafe GPTs.

The GPT Store will be launched for ChatGPT Plus users, enterprise users, and new team users (ChatGPT Teams).

ChatGPT Team is a paid version of ChatGPT for small teams of around 150 people. Like ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team users can also access advanced data analysis features of GPT-4, DALL-E 3, and OpenAI, and control data. OpenAI said the ChatGPT Team's data and conversations won't be used to train any of its models. ChatGPT Team users can also create custom GPTS based on the team's specific needs, or use other GPTS in the store. ChatGPT Team is billed as follows: $25 per user per month for annual billing; $30 per user per month for monthly billing.

The launch of the GPT Store reflects OpenAI's more open attitude towards the artificial intelligence market. If successful, GPT Store will mark a new moment. It has drastically lowered the development threshold for AI native applications, so that more people can participate in the innovation and application of artificial intelligence. At the same time, it also provides users with the possibility of financial returns, further stimulating users' enthusiasm for innovation. Some analysts believe that the advent of GPT Store has more clearly defined the business model and will open up an era of AI applications.
