Author: Mary Meeker

Mary Mikel, known as the "Queen of the Internet", released her 2019 Internet trend report in the early morning of June 12, Beijing time. This is also the 24th year of her Internet report.

The following are the main points of the report:

Point 1: the Internet demographic dividend continues to decline

Global Internet users grew by 6%, compared with 7% in 2017, and global shipments of new smartphones fell 4%, compared with 0% in 2017, according to the report.

At the same time, the number of global Internet users has reached 3.8 billion, with a penetration rate of more than 50 per cent. The Internet Queen stressed in the report that new sources of growth are still difficult to find.

Point 2: Africa, the Middle East or the "New World"

The report publishes Internet population penetration in several regions: 48 per cent in the Asia-Pacific region, 78 per cent in Europe, 32 per cent in Africa and the Middle East, 62 per cent in Latin America and the Caribbean and 89 per cent in North America. This means that there is a lot of room for improvement in Internet coverage in Africa and the Middle East.

Point 3: Sino-US Monopoly Internet head Company

The report released a list of the top 30 Internet companies by market capitalization as of June 7, including 18 in the United States, 7 in China, 1 in Japan, 1 in Canada, 1 in Australia, 1 in Argentina and 1 in Sweden.

Point 4: equipment transfer

In the United States, for example, Americans spent 226 minutes a day on mobile in 2019, surpassing television for the first time.

Point 5: three major user behaviors on mobile

The report announces the applications with the highest proportion of mobile users: Facebook Inc, YouTube, WhatsApp, Wechat, Instagram, Facebook Inc Messenger, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, Twitch.

From this, it can be seen that users' time on the mobile side is mainly engaged in three aspects of behavior: social networking, video and picture sharing.

Point 6: the rise of short videos in China

As in previous years, the report devoted a chapter to interpreting the development trend of the Internet in China. The report shows that from April 2017 to April 2019, the average daily use of short video APP in China has increased from less than 100 million hours to 600 million hours.

Point 7: e-commerce growth slows, but still erodes physical retail share

E-commerce now accounts for 15% of retail sales, according to the report. The growth rate of e-commerce has slowed, with 12.4 per cent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of this year, compared with just 2 per cent in brick-and-mortar retail.

Point 8: privacy concerns intensify

Privacy is an unavoidable sensitive topic in the Internet field. The report stresses that people around the world are becoming more worried about Internet privacy than they were a year ago. According to the data, 87 per cent of global network traffic was encrypted in the first quarter, up from 53 per cent three years ago.

Point 9: cloud computing penetration has increased significantly

The report takes Europe and the US as an example. As of the first quarter of this year, the coverage of PaaS and LaaS platforms was 37 per cent and 49 per cent, respectively, compared with 27 per cent and 39 per cent last year.

Point 10: the change of news communication channels

According to the report, 43 per cent of people now get their news through Facebook Inc and 21 per cent through YouTube,12% via Twitter. So the Internet Queen believes that social media can magnify hot topics.

About the Queen of the Internet report

In 1995, Mary Mikel and her colleague Chris Depp began to publish the Internet report. The report was seen by investors as the investment Bible of the Internet, and the book was released to the public, causing great repercussions in the technology industry as a whole.

The Internet Queen report became a must-read report for almost every Internet entrepreneur at that time, and it was no different from a stock selection guide. The stocks she recommended to investors, such as AOL, Dell, Amazon.Com Inc and eBay, quickly brought more than ten times the return on their investment.
