Investors Ignore Increasing Losses at PAR Technology (NYSE:PAR) as Stock Jumps 7.2% This Past Week

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 13, 2023 21:07

PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 11% in the last month. Looking further back, the stock has generated good profits over five years. It has returned a market beating 86% in that time.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

Check out our latest analysis for PAR Technology

Given that PAR Technology didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

For the last half decade, PAR Technology can boast revenue growth at a rate of 14% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. Revenue has been growing at a reasonable clip, so it's debatable whether the share price growth of 13% full reflects the underlying business growth. The key question is whether revenue growth will slow down, and if so, how quickly. There's no doubt that it can be difficult to value pre-profit companies.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between PAR Technology's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. We note that PAR Technology's TSR, at 88% is higher than its share price return of 86%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 18% in the last year, PAR Technology shareholders lost 6.5%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 14%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with PAR Technology .
