Broadcom (AVGO.US) closed up more than 2% Guo Mingyi: Apple (AAPL.US) has suspended self-development of Wi-Fi chips

The Zhitong Finance App learned that by Thursday's closing, Broadcom (AVGO.US) stock had closed up more than 2%. An influential analyst previously stated that Apple (AAPL.US) had suspended work on the Wi-Fi chip it was developing.

According to Tianfeng Securities analyst Guo Mingyi on Thursday, Apple has stopped developing its own Wi-Fi chips “for a while.” Apple has decided to prioritize the development of 3nm chips.

“The slowdown in processor upgrades is detrimental to terminal product sales (such as A16 and M2 series chips),” Guo Mingyi wrote. “Therefore, in order to ensure that the world's most advanced 3nm process processors can be mass-produced from 2023 to 2025, and that performance upgrades and power consumption improvements are significant compared to previous generation chips, Apple has used the vast majority of IC design resources to develop processors.”

Guo Mingyi also added that Apple previously developed a Wi-Fi chip, not a Wi-Fi+Bluetooth chip that is more difficult to manufacture.

However, it was reported earlier this month that Apple is working to replace Broadcom's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth integrated chips with its own self-developed chipset starting in 2025. Also, after Guo Mingyi's report was released, another report also pointed out that research on Apple's Wi-Fi+Bluetooth integrated chip is still ongoing.

However, as far as it is concerned, Apple's suspension of its own research may be significant for Broadcom because about 20% of the company's revenue comes from Apple.
