According to a report released by the Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) on Wednesday, many automakers are moving towards self-driving, with Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Tesla, Inc. having the highest proportion of new cars sold with automatic emergency brakes (AEB). By September 1, 2022, a total of 20 carmakers (about 99 per cent of all new cars in the US market) had agreed to equip each new car with an AEB system (also known as a pre-collision braking system).

This is a voluntary equipment commitment made by automakers, but it will have huge potential benefits. IIHS estimates that by 2025, the system will be able to prevent 28000 traffic accidents and 12000 injuries on roads in the United States. In the latest report, IIHS also said that between Sept. 1, 2017 and Aug. 31, 2018, half of the 20 automakers were already equipped with AEB, up from 1/3 a year ago.

IIHS said that in percentage terms, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Tesla, Inc. have the highest number of AEB systems, all exceeding 93%, and Tesla, Inc. reaching 100%. In terms of the number of AEB systems, 2.2 million of Toyota's 2.5 million new cars are equipped with AEB. Nissan was not far behind, with 1.1 million cars (78 per cent) and Honda in third place with 980000 vehicles, accounting for 61 per cent.

IIHS said in the report that less than 10 per cent of vehicles from brands such as Ford, Mitsubishi and Porsche were equipped with AEB, while Jaguar Land Rover did not have any AEB. IIHS also studied which carmakers use AEB as the standard configuration for their models and found that for 13 of the 20 automakers, AEB has a standard configuration of "at least half of the 2019 models at all equipment levels".
