Tencent Science and Technology News on the afternoon of January 17, around the recent Canadian events, 5G and other topics, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei held a round table meeting with a number of domestic media at Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen for about an hour and a half. Such in-depth communication with domestic media is rare for Ren Zhengfei, who has always kept a low profile.

Ren Zhengfei unequivocally responded to recent US accusations that Huawei "stole trade secrets" that Huawei absolutely respects the intellectual property rights of others.

1. Reporter: Huawei has encountered some difficulties recently. Has Huawei systematically assessed whether so many years of investment in R & D and innovation can resist these difficulties?

General Ren: it should be said that the problems we may encounter today were predicted more than a decade ago. We have been preparing for more than a decade, and we are not completely hasty and unprepared to deal with this situation. These difficulties will have an impact on us, but the impact will not be great and there will be no major problems.

Reporter: so in the current environment, how do you understand the significance of independent innovation to Chinese companies?

General Ren: I never support the word "independent innovation". In my opinion, science and technology are the common wealth of mankind, and we must step on the shoulders of our predecessors, so as to shorten our process of becoming a leader in the world. You have to do everything by yourself, and no one except the peasants should have this idea. I support independent innovation on a spiritual level. In other words, others have innovated, we should respect other people's intellectual property rights, get permission from others, and pay for it. If we do it again and do it again, we have to get permission and still have to pay. This is the law. Of course, scientists are independent innovation, I am referring to the engineering innovation of companies like ours.

2. Reporter: I would like to ask next, what is Huawei's worst plan for this anti-globalization wave?

Boss Ren: the changes outside have not had such a great impact on us. Because we are confident that our products are better than others, so that others do not want to buy. Let me cite an example: there are few manufacturers that can do 5G in the world, Huawei does the best; there are not many manufacturers in the world that can do microwave, and Huawei is the most advanced. Only one company in the world can combine 5G base stations with state-of-the-art microwave technology to form a base station, and that is Huawei. In the future, our 5G base station and microwave will be integrated, and the base station can use microwave ultra-wideband back transmission without optical fiber. Some people say that in the past, this is only applicable to the vast rural areas, but 5G is ultra-wideband, microwave is also ultra-wideband, which is also suitable for the majority of western countries. Because the vast number of western countries are scattered villas, is to watch 8K TV, high-speed information consumption, it is necessary to buy our equipment. Of course, it doesn't have to buy, so it will be very expensive to build another network. Our technological breakthroughs have also created more opportunities for our market and brought more fulcrum for survival. Therefore, we are not as worried as the outside world thought.

3. Reporter: for a long time, the most common accusation in the West against Chinese enterprises, including Huawei, is the theft of intellectual property rights. What do you think of this topic?

Boss Ren: I can't represent Chinese enterprises, I can only represent Huawei. Huawei has experienced several major lawsuits in the United States, all of which have achieved good results. Huawei currently has 87805 patents, of which 11152 core patents are granted in the United States, and our technology patents are valuable to the American information society. We have reached a patent cross-license with many western companies. Huawei cannot represent other companies, but we absolutely respect the intellectual property rights of others.

4. Reporter: why has China not produced enterprises that develop through intellectual property licensing model like Qualcomm Inc? There are some enterprises in Shenzhen that have their own intellectual property rights. As they are besieged by intellectual property lawsuits and foreign companies, they have no choice but to sink downstream of the industrial chain. May I ask you, how should China's intellectual property system be adjusted?

General Ren: if we regard intellectual property rights as real rights, maybe the country's scientific and technological innovation and development will be better. That is, if the intellectual property law is part of the property law, the infringement of intellectual property rights is the infringement of real rights, such an environment is conducive to the original invention. Without original inventions, how can there be a future "Qualcomm Inc"? We should realize that intellectual property protection is conducive to the long-term development of the country, rather than an excuse used by the West to card us. Therefore, first of all, our country should not support fake goods, do not support knockoffs, but should support and protect the original. It is possible that today's economic development will be slower, but the quality will be better, and more and more competitive companies will emerge.

5. Reporter: now there is a feeling in the outside world that it is back to the McCarthy era, using communism as the hat and putting it on some enterprises or individuals to crack down. Do you feel that the promulgation of China's Intelligence Law, especially Article 7, will cause some obstacles to Huawei's international market? Do you think it is necessary to interpret it reasonably through some channels?

General Ren: first of all, we don't have the final say on the interpretation of the basic Law. But the government has made it clear that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made it clear that there is no law in China that requires any enterprise to install a back door.

Second, China also stresses that in any country, enterprises must abide by all applicable laws and regulations of the country where they operate, including the export control and sanctions laws and regulations applicable to the United Nations, the United States and the European Union.

Reporter: Hello, Chief Ren. I have been working as a journalist in Shenzhen for many years. As far as I can remember, Huawei has been so intensive in the past 30 years that it was rare for you to come forward and meet with the media for several days in a row. Including foreign media are saying that the appointment of the general manager to meet reporters this year is a relatively rare arrangement to deal with the rare and special difficulties faced by Huawei. I wonder if you agree with this evaluation. What is the main message of this arrangement? Another question is that some western governments criticize Huawei's cyber security. Do you think this is out of historical prejudice, or does Huawei really need to strengthen? How can Huawei allay the concerns of Western countries?

Boss Ren: first, the media was forced by the Public Relations Department. They said that during this period of time, we have to convey confidence to our 180000 employees and our customers, so that they can know more about us, trust us, and at the same time let society feel relieved. In fact, we have not encountered much difficulties. You may not have attended our internal meetings, which are all emotional and do not feel much difficulty. But the outside world does not know, we need to convey some confidence, need me to speak to play a role. Therefore, to see the media is to convey a kind of confidence to society. Of course, our income growth rate may slow this year, and it is estimated that the growth rate will not exceed 20%.

Second, with regard to network security, it is necessary to distinguish information security from network security, which is now confused. Over the past 30 years, Huawei has provided network services to more than 3 billion people in more than 170 countries and has a good security record. But we still need to make progress. Now we need to reconstruct the software architecture to meet the four goals of "minimalist network architecture, minimalist network transaction model, extremely secure network, and GDPR-compliant privacy protection". We will spend a lot of money on research and development in the next five years to be the best network in the world. In five years' time, the annual sales revenue may more than double that of this year.

Reporter: I remember when I interviewed you for the first time in 2014, you said, "what's so mysterious about Huawei?" Five years later, do you think Huawei's veil has really been lifted? There seems to be more skepticism in the international community.

Boss Ren: that means more wrinkles. Because the larger the radius, the more problems. If we shrink to a small point, like farmers farming, only the size of potatoes, the outside world can see clearly, then no one will question it. The larger the radius, the more unclear we can see, and we will not be able to see clearly the exploration in the next 10-20 years, so there will be more questions, but questioning does not mean that there are many problems. In addition, questioning is also valuable. Scientists are born to doubt. How else would they find something new? He does not believe that there will be new discoveries, so questioning itself is an inevitable by-product in the process of progress.

The future development of the information society is unimaginable. In the next 20 or 30 years, there will be a great revolution in human society, and earth-shaking changes will take place in the mode of production. For example, artificial intelligence is used in industrial production, which greatly improves production efficiency. Everyone visited our production line, it can not be called artificial intelligence, only a part of artificial intelligence, but there are not many people on the production line. In five years' time, only five or six or even two or three people may be needed on this production line, mainly for maintenance. Of course, many people on our production line are PhDs, not ordinary operators, especially in optical chip production, there are very few PhDs who can do it.

In this era, for a country, the focus is on the development of education, and mainly basic education, especially in rural areas. Without a good basic education, it is difficult to make a difference in basic research. Give more money to rural teachers so that outstanding people are willing to be teachers, and outstanding children are willing to enter normal schools, such as our older generation of revolutionaries Mao Zedong, Su Yu, Huang Kecheng, Xu Guangda and Yun Daiying. If we all come from a normal school, we can achieve "cultivating better people with the best people". But now this is not the case. Teachers are poorly paid, and children do not want to study because they do not earn much money when they see more knowledge. In this way, we will not be able to adapt to the society in the next 20 or 30 years, and the society may be divided. Full use of artificial intelligence production may return to the West, because there are no trade union problems, social welfare problems, strike problems. Production without artificial intelligence may be moved to Southeast Asia, Latin America, Southern Europe and other countries with low labor costs. Our country is faced with this kind of division, so we should raise basic education to the highest program of the country in order to meet the future revolution. To improve the cultural quality of the whole nation should be the main responsibility of the party and the state and the duty of every citizen. Today, the streets are full of high-rise buildings, which will become old in 20 or 30 years. If we invest in education, these poor children will be PhDs in 20 or 30 years' time, and the country will become more prosperous when they start to charge.

At this important turning point in history, Huawei can only take care of itself, not others, so we put a lot of money forward. Just now a CCTV reporter asked me, "you earn very little money, why do you invest so much in scientific research?" for example, our profit this year is more than 9 billion, but the investment in scientific research is 15-20 billion US dollars. In fact, where this 15 billion is invested by us, it is all cost, in fact, it is invested by customers. The money our customers give us is not to generate profits, but to generate input.

Why are we going ahead? The cycle of new technologies entering the era has become shorter. In the past, we waited until scientists worked out equations. After 50 or 60 years, we finally found that these equations were useful. From the electromagnetic theory, after another 50 or 60 years, it has been found that the electromagnetic theory can be used in radio; after another few decades. Today is impossible, this process is very short, if not millisecond, it is very short. If we still wait for the industrial division of labor and do not enter the basic research, we may lag behind the times.

China is a country with a large population. If we become a country with large talents, we will have more confidence in competing with others. Therefore, primary school teachers should be given more respect. Of course, the treatment of teachers today is much better than in the past, but only by making teachers the most glorious profession can the country have hope in the future and succeed in the world competition.

Today, we can see that Huawei has a lot of success. in fact, the most important aspect of success is foreign scientists. Because Huawei's salary is higher than that of western companies, many scientists work for Huawei. We have at least 700 mathematicians, more than 800 physicists, more than 120 chemists, 6,000 or 7,000 basic research experts, more than 60,000 senior engineers and engineers of various kinds. To form this combination and move forward. Therefore, if our country wants to compete with the West, we can only use 50, 60 or 100 years to revitalize education.

Revitalizing education does not lie in the house, but in the teachers. The Whampoa military Academy is two leggings, and Kangda is a small bench. You watched the movie about Kangda, moved a small bench, sat on the loess land, heard Mao Zedong's speech without a microphone, and built a new China. Why aren't Huangpu and Kangda two great famous schools in the world? Therefore, material is not the most important, talent is the most important, the engineers of the human soul should be respected, this country has hope.

Reporter: when you put forward the issue of basic education, do you hope to give a warning to society?

General Ren: in my opinion, society should have the slogan "use the best people to train better people" and "We can't be poor teachers no matter how poor we are."

Interviewer: what are you going to do about this?

Boss Ren: when we do a good job in Huawei, we set an example for everyone. What does Huawei have? have nothing at all! Huawei has neither background nor resources, and has nothing but human heads. We have put together the heads of a group of Chinese and some foreigners and achieved what we have achieved today, which proves that education is great.

Reporter: in the 4G era, we feel that Huawei is also taking the lead from many competitors to enter a new realm. It was originally thought that in the 5G era, Huawei would be greeted by a vast world. But so far, there are many obstacles set up by the outside world. You also said just now that Huawei has assessed the situation encountered. I would like to ask, what measures does Huawei plan to take to break through the current predicament? In addition, on the second question, we also visited two Huawei laboratories in the morning, and we still felt that Huawei had invested a lot of effort in basic research. The national environment also encouraged enterprises or universities to do basic research. I want to let the general manager think about basic research.

Boss Ren: a teacher resigned and said the world was big. She wanted to see it. I would like to say that the world is very big, there are still many places we can do 5G, we can not do so much for the time being. Rejection in a few places does not mean that we are rejected in most places. And 5G has actually exaggerated its role, and Huawei's achievements have been exaggerated by more people. Because we ran so fast, our young people could not contain their excitement and exaggerated things by talking and talking all the time. In fact, human society does not have such an urgent need for 5G. What people need now is broadband, while the main content of 5G is not broadband. 5G has a lot of connotations, and the occurrence of these connotations needs more demand and a long period of time. Don't think of 5G as a wave, the wave is coming, the wealth is coming, catch it quickly, if you can't get it, you'll miss it. The development of 5G must be slow. Japan and South Korea are still 4G, Japan and South Korea use 4G very well, it is enough to meet the use. Our 4G is not working well. Turning on my phone is only 20-30 megabytes. In fact, the 4G we provide can reach 300-400 megabytes, which is enough to watch 8K TV. But our network, open only 20 to 30 megabytes during the day, can only watch 4K, can not watch 8K TV. Why? The network structure is not good. What is the bad network structure? There are still no mathematicians studying the network structure of operators. So the problem of network structure has not been solved. 5G is similar to 4G in use. Just like my mouth is very big, but my throat is very small, I still can't swallow a big piece of meat. Therefore, not 5G base stations are omnipotent, so don't be in such a hurry. It is estimated that 5G will enter the millimeter wave next. Millimeter wave means that as long as you double the money, the bandwidth can be increased by a hundred times, that is, you can download dozens of high-definition videos per second, which we can fully do in the lab. 5G has not been brought into full play for the time being, it is too fast. This time, CCTV is used to broadcast the Spring Festival Gala live in Shenzhen (5G). It is only a demonstration, and this demonstration is not enough to turn into a large-scale commercial activity.

In technical research, we have a saying that "a cup of coffee absorbs cosmic energy". What? Reporter: if this is the case, then basic research is not suitable for the company to do.

Boss Ren: but if the company doesn't do it, we can't lead or lead the times, then we can't make excess money, we can't have over-investment, and we'll become a contract manufacturer. Why can we take the lead all the way? In electronics, we have made the most advanced chips ARM CPU, AI chips, in the photon exchange, we are also the world's leading. On the quantum side, we are following, at least after studying how we use other people's quantum computers.

Of the three, electron, photon and quantum, two of them are ahead of human society and follow in quantum computing. Therefore, only by carrying out basic research can we have excess profits, have the money to make strategic investment, and lead the society forward. The scientists outside welcome us because we regard them as lighthouses and we do not infringe upon any of their interests. There is a Baidu Act in the United States, which gives universities and non-profit research institutions the right to apply for patents and patents for federally funded inventions, thus creating a strong driving force to promote the transformation of scientific research achievements. We are also in accordance with the Baidu Act, we have no selfishness, but we are not working with the school, mainly with the professor, I must have this leader to cooperate with you.

9. Reporter: if you evaluate Huawei's current basic research, what is the technical level of Huawei? What is your personal goal? I remember when you attended the National Science and Technology Conference two years ago, you said that Huawei had entered no man's land. Is it still at this level now?

General Manager Ren: generally speaking, we should not be satisfied with our basic research evaluation. Why? In these 30 years, in fact, our real breakthrough is mathematics, mobile phones, system equipment is mathematics as the center, but in physics, chemistry, neurology, brain science. Other disciplines, we have just started, or backward, the future of electronic science is the integration of these sciences, not many people are willing to come to us. Therefore, we are not enough in the process of scientifically building the structure of the future information society.

With regard to no man's land, at that time, it was mainly about the problem of "time delay". For example, now self-driving is the problem of time delay. Some time ago, my wife and my youngest daughter ran on the highway in a German self-driving car for more than two hours in Europe. Europe is already entering the L3 phase of self-driving. As you can see, our cooperation with Audi in the field of self-driving is also the L3 stage. The highest self-driving is the L5 stage, when it reaches the L5 stage, 5G starts to play a role, but there is still a delay problem.

Therefore, the real exploration of no man's land is to reduce the time delay. Any circuit must have capacitance and resistance, which must produce time delay. There is no time delay when human society requires no time delay. The development of the times has entered the stage of saturation curve, and we happen to be on the flat top of this curve, and the new company can easily catch up with us. This is what we think is the risk in the future. You see, how easy it is to make an electronic product now. It will come out as soon as you buy a few chips. Our advantage is gradually no longer an advantage, and we are worried that we can't run in this field.

This time, the prime minister went to Belgium to visit a design platform of IMEC. The prime minister saw that this platform could increase the human electronic bandwidth to 3 nm and 1 nm. What if we reach the limit and cannot meet the needs of human beings, and graphene can not replace silicon at this time? We just stack the chips, but the biggest problem is to dissipate the heat between the two chips, which is also cutting-edge technology. So, heat will be the most cutting-edge science in the electronics industry, and our research in this area is also leading, but it is too abstract. So, to meet the challenges of the future, we are all looking for a way, but if we can't find it slowly, the pursuers will arrive soon.

10. Reporter: when I communicated with an entrepreneur before, he said, "I am trembling every day, walking on thin ice, fearing that I will be overtaken by others and that users will abandon their company." "I wonder if you have such a worry?

General Ren: this "trembling, like treading on thin ice" is an adjective that we say every day. If that's the case, you can't run at all. We are still confident, but we always exaggerate, as if we are really worried, we should not listen to those adjectives.

Reporter: will Huawei be the next to fall?

Boss Ren: certainly.

Interviewer: but not necessarily "next"?

Reporter: other companies are talking about being a century-old store and inheriting it.

General Ren: it is very difficult to be a century-old shop. The most important thing is to get rid of laziness. Once a head said that he wanted to sum up the mechanism of Huawei. I said, Chief Executive, please don't sum up. The first 20 years have been positive progress, and these 10 years have been retrogressive. why? Even if people become lazy when they have money, they are unwilling to send him to hard places and hard work. How to get rid of laziness is a challenge for us. Therefore, we emphasize self-criticism, which is to gradually dispel self-laziness through self-criticism, but I think it is not easy. It is much more difficult to change one's own life than to change the lives of others.

11. Reporter: at last year's Huawei human resources seminar, everyone gave you a lot of opinions, which were summed up as ten deadly sins. Do you think these suggestions are reasonable? have you improved them according to them?

Boss Ren: ten deadly sins, we posted it all on the Internet of the community, let 180000 employees criticize it, and we discussed how to change it. This will form a culture that will gradually change some of our internal mechanisms. In my opinion, the community generally only looks at criticism, and I filter out those who say nice things. Because I want to see what happened at the grass-roots level and whether the management did the right thing. After finding out, find someone to investigate whether there is such a problem.

12. Reporter: you have talked a lot about basic research. When you were young, did you ever think about becoming a scientist in the future? Do you feel that your life is going the wrong way now? The second question, you just mentioned that Huawei has a lot of money now, so I don't know where to spend it. Huawei has done a very good job in its products. some time ago, there was a rumor that "Huawei will cooperate with Yuan Longping to build sea rice." Huawei quickly declared that this was fake news, but behind this rumor, it may reflect that many people hope that Huawei can make more and better products. Do Huawei have any cross-border ideas?

General Ren: first, when Huawei has hundreds of people, it charges at a "wall entrance", while thousands, tens of thousands, and hundreds of thousands of people charge at the same "wall entrance", which has not changed. moreover, our annual shelling volume of a "city wall entrance" has exceeded US $15-20 billion, which is only the cost of research and development, and other departments are also charging, which adds up to much more than this amount. Only by focusing on a breakthrough at one point can we gain a foothold in human society. When we have to tow a lot of "trailers", "carriages", "rickshaws" …... At that time, our "high-speed rail" can no longer run.

It is just a saying that there is too much money to be spent. We all invest more in the future, and it is not easy to spend our money well. Each department has to spend money, and the budget review is extremely strict. For example, if we set aside 3.68 billion dollars for strategic expenses, how can they spend it without pressure? In addition, we have a Huawei University, most of whom have received doctorates and masters, including many employees who have graduated from famous overseas universities and have been very successful in practice for a few years, come back for re-education, and then go out, re-educate and go out again. The cost is unimaginably high. Huawei University has not been repaired yet. You are welcome to visit again next time.

13. Reporter: boss Ren, you said that "there may be many opportunities in the next smart world." Huawei has become a leader in many fields, from chips to servers and clouds. There is no company in the world that can compete with it. Does Huawei have a boundary in its business? where is the boundary? Because many partners are worried that Huawei has stolen their business.

Boss Ren: in fact, what we do is a "pipeline", providing an opportunity for information flow. Isn't the server storage we do is a "pool" in the "pipeline"? Isn't the terminal a "faucet"? All these technologies are in the same vein. Why is the technological progress of Huawei terminals so fast? Because we have a lot of strategic reserves in pipeline technology, we can not run out of them, so we assign these departments to the terminal, and scientists serve them, so we quickly leap up. Therefore, we will never do this cross-boundary problem. The day before yesterday, a Western reporter also asked me, "can you build cars?" "I said, we will never build a car. We do the module of car networking, the electronic part of the car-- edge computing is done by us, and we may do the best in the world. But it is not a car, we have to cooperate with the car, the car uses our module to enter the autopilot. I would never build a car. Therefore, we will not cross the border, we have boundaries, electronic flow as the center of the field, non-this field will be cut.

14. Reporter: recently, I have seen many reports or speeches, including the US think tank, which mentioned that there may be two camps in the global science and technology field in the future. What do you think of the future trend of the technology industry? Because Huawei has never stood in line, but is it possible for Huawei to be left alone in this big power game?

General Ren: if there is a game between China and the United States in the future, China must first attach importance to education. We send more than 40,000 employees overseas, why don't most of our employees want to come back? The problem of children going to school, how to take classes when they come back, the way of education is completely different. Such a series of problems, so that our staff can not flow, children can not come back. Even in Africa, children can go to the best schools, but they can't go to school when they return to Shenzhen. Therefore, education is the most urgent problem in our country, and children's right to education should be fully satisfied. Every parent is most worried about their children. Therefore, the blind demographic dividend is wrong, because the social mode of production is towards artificial intelligence.

General Zhu of Dongfeng Motor asked me, I said, "Chinese self-driving can start with tractors." We do not compete with the West on the same track, so we use tractors to plough land 24 hours a day, not afraid of mosquitoes, heavy rain, and mountain climbing. Will agricultural production efficiency not be improved?

15. Reporter: you mentioned artificial intelligence many times in your interview. I now see that many companies have regarded artificial intelligence as a major goal, which must be called artificial intelligence. Are you worried that this trend will lead to a bubble in artificial intelligence?

Boss Ren: artificial intelligence may be a bubble. But don't be afraid of this bubble bursting, those failed expert engineers, we recruit, why? We need to change our production structure, change our service structure around the world, and we need these people. Why would I want a loser? The person who fails is that the ideal is too big and the platform is too small. But my platform is big enough to accommodate you to dance. Why is artificial intelligence bubbling? It's the same thing. In fact, the world only needs one company, such as an office system. Who can replace Microsoft Corp? When real robots come out, 90% of robot companies will be difficult. Therefore, it is difficult for me to explain whether there is a bubble in artificial intelligence. In the project of our company, such as the base station on the high mountain in Xinjiang, JD.com, the delivery boy, rode up the mountain on his motorcycle and installed the equipment in accordance with our instructions. After we conducted the test in Xi'an, we passed the test and checked and accepted, and the report and invoice came out. I'll pay you. If we do not use artificial intelligence to improve production efficiency, our company will not be able to achieve low costs, high profits, and increase strategic investment in the future.

16. Reporter: what do you think are the main difficulties of Huawei at present?

Boss Ren: we feel that apart from difficulties, they are all difficulties, and there are no difficulties.

17. Reporter: please tell me something about international business. What are Huawei's plans for international business development next?

Boss Ren: there is no change. You can't do what you did in the past.

Reporter: what areas do you plan to focus on?

Boss Ren: do not change the current direction, do not enter unfamiliar areas.

18. Reporter: although the Western media have also asked about it, we still want to know about the topic of Ms. Meng, and we hope you can answer it as a father. What was the occasion when you first heard that your daughter was detained in Canada? Do you have a smooth channel of communication with her now? what's the situation now? January 29th is the deadline for formal extradition by the United States. Is there any difficulty?

General Ren: Meng Wanzhou and I were supposed to have the same meeting in Argentina, and she was the main host of the meeting. She had a connecting flight in Canada and was unfortunately detained.
