A number of large social media companies continue to invest their resources in short video features to attract young users and compete with upstart TikTok.

According to the latest survey of American teenagers by the Pew Research Center (Pew Research Center), the competitive landscape of social media has changed significantly since 2015. Now YouTube is at the top of the list, Tiktok is the latecomer, and Facebook Inc is obviously snubbed.

The Pew Research Center conducted a survey of 1316 17-year-olds between April and May this year, following a similar survey conducted in 2015.

According to the survey, YouTube is currently the favorite social media for American teenagers, with about 95% of respondents saying they will use YouTube web pages or apps.

TikTok (launched in 2018), which was not launched at the time of the 2015 survey, showed strong momentum.Sixty-seven per cent (about 2/3) of teenagers surveyed said they would use TikTok.

In third place, social media is Instagram,62%, and respondents said they would use the product.

By contrast, Facebook Inc's status today is difficult to compare with that of the past.In 2015, as many as 71 per cent of teenagers said they were using Facebook Inc, but now that proportion has fallen to 32 per cent.

Over the same period, teenage usage of Twitter and Tumblr also declined, from 33 per cent to 23 per cent and from 14 per cent to 5 per cent, respectively.

A number of large social media companies, including Meta and Alphabet, the parent company of YouTube, are continuously devoting resources to the short video feature on their platforms to attract young users and compete with upstart TikTok.

Social media has become an essential part of the lives of American teenagers, according to the survey.

More than half of the teenagers surveyed said it was difficult to give up using social media, and 1/3 thought they spent too much time on social media.
