[TechWeb] June 30, according to media reports, Samsung SDI, a battery manufacturer owned by Samsung Group, is preparing a new pilot production line at its Cheonan plant in South Korea to test supply to$Tesla, Inc. (TSLA.US) $With 4680 batteries, the annual output of this production line is slightly lower than that of 1GWh.

Samsung SDI plans to test the technology this year, and the actual production line may be built at Samsung SDI's battery plant in Salemban, Malaysia, according to sources.

The 4680 battery is a new type of battery developed by Tesla, Inc.. This battery has a diameter of 46mm and a length of 80mm. The power output has been increased six times, the mileage has increased by 16%, and the cost per kilowatt hour has been reduced by 14%.

Tesla, Inc. said that compared with the 2170 cylindrical batteries currently used in Model 3 and Model Y models, the overall energy density of the battery has increased by five times.

Tesla, Inc. has been producing the new batteries in a factory near his Fremont plant, but in limited quantities. Although the company can produce its own 4680 batteries, it also relies on partners to help meet demand.

It is reported that Samsung SDI will be the third manufacturer to try to win a contract to supply 4680 batteries to Tesla, Inc. in bulk, along with Panasonic and LG energy solutions.

In terms of battery supply, Tesla, Inc. has been a major partner of Panasonic, which makes batteries for Tesla, Inc. 's electric vehicles, including the Model 3, and energy storage products.

In early June, the company said it had provided 4680 battery samples to Tesla, Inc.. In addition, the company said it would mass-produce 4680 batteries at its Kawayama plant in Japan in the new fiscal year, which begins in March next year, before transferring production to North America.

In mid-June this year, LG Energy Solutions announced that it would invest 730 billion won (US $567.7 million) to expand the capacity of electric vehicle batteries in South Korea, of which 580 billion won (US $450 million) would be used to invest in its second plant in Wukang, South Korea, to add a production line to produce 4680 cylindrical batteries with a capacity of 9GWh.

The new production line added by LG Energy Solutions at South Korea's Wukang No.2 plant is most likely to be supplied by Tesla, Inc., as it is the first electric vehicle manufacturer to use 4680 cylindrical batteries. (little fox)
