Sony Group Corp's flagship game console PlayStation 5 has been in short supply since its debut at the end of 2020. Earlier, Sony Group Corp launched a new version of PlayStation game subscription service, targeting Microsoft Corp (MSFT.US)'s Xbox Game Pass.
"Sony Group Corp now seems determined to expand the PlayStation ecosystem," said Serkan Toto, an industry analyst at Kantan Games. He pointed out that the number of monthly active users of PC platform Steam exceeds that of Sony Group Corp's PlayStation. "it makes perfect sense for a hardware company to sell not only software to large users, but also branded accessories to them."
Compared with Sony Group Corp's traditional game console business, PC games business benefits from higher hardware spending.
"given the PlayStation 5 supply shortage and soaring game development costs, the PC game market is becoming critical for Sony Group Corp to show investors stable profits," said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Securities.
Microsoft Corp occupies a dominant position in the PC game market, with a range of computer and peripheral products, as well as game brands.
