IC Insights, an agency, pointed out that the main cause of the shortage of automotive chips last year was the surge in demand, not the inability of semiconductor suppliers to increase production. According to IC Insights, shipments of automotive chips reached 52.4 billion in 2021, an annual increase of 30%, which is much higher than the 22% growth rate of overall semiconductor shipments, and is the highest growth rate of automotive chip shipments since 2011. It is excluded that shipments of automotive chips in 2020 may decline due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, which is lower than the base period. Shipments of automotive chips in 2021 also increased by 27% compared with 2019, the year before the outbreak, ICInsights said. According to IC Insights, global semiconductor shipments totaled 394 billion in 2021, about double the 194 billion shipped in 2011.
