I was in elementary school when I first read this famous saying by Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. The school is located in a beautiful county town in Wuyi Mountain District, Fujian Province, where there are clear green rivers and layered hills, and the whole county town stretches gently on both sides of the river. Although I was a little excited when I read this sentence when I was young, I had no idea why I was excited, what it really meant, and where the revolution of our post-70s generation was.

1. Knight-errant feelings

In middle school, it was popular to read martial arts novels. The first martial arts book I read was The Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. After I got a set of four books, I forgot to eat and sleep and couldn't let go. I was deeply moved by the story of Guo Jing in the book. He was born at a time of exile in adversity. He was stupid and unsuitable for martial arts practice, but he was chivalrous and warm-hearted.

After countless hardships and persistence, Guo Jing finally became a martial arts master of "chivalry, for the country and the people", and became a national hero to resist foreign aggression.

At that time, all I had in mind was where to build a secret book of martial arts, to learn from a master, to practice the internal skills of the Jiuyin True Sutra or Quanzhen School, to become a modern version of Guo Jing, to become a generation of martial arts masters, to eliminate evil and help hardships, and to do justice for heaven. Maybe this is our revolution?

Of course, I soon found that such fantasies were very unreliable. Finally began to study hard, and the grades are getting better and better. The year of admission to the university was the beginning of the birth of the Chinese stock market. I enthusiastically participated in the simulated stock market on campus, organized the student simulation investment contest, and eagerly read all the books related to securities investment in the library. Now to be a fund and join the investment industry is indeed the reason planted at that time.

2. Strong Forrest Gump

When I was in college, it was very popular to watch videos and movies on campus. My favorite movie is Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks plays Forrest Gump congenitally, and his leg is disabled, but his mother is strong, she often encourages Forrest Gump to be "foolish" and asks him to make continuous self-improvement. Forrest Gump went to school like an ordinary child and loved Jenny all his life. With the help of his mother and Jenny, Forrest Gump's leg got better miraculously and began to run all his life.

Later, by keeping running, by keeping his promise, and by helping others, Forrest Gump became a superstar of olives, a hero of the Vietnam War, a diplomatic envoy of table tennis and a millionaire.

I remember that I saw the movie Forrest Gump three times in a row. Looking at it, I seem to see the shadow of Guo Jing from Forrest Gump.

They are not talented, but they all have very good human qualities, they are kind-hearted, simple and selfless, at the same time self-improvement, perseverance, and finally achieved a successful and happy life.

3. Buffett is qualitative.

In 1994, I had the privilege of becoming a red waistcoat on the exchange. Later, he went to graduate school and worked at the exchange. During this time, I became fascinated by Buffett, read a lot about Buffett, and began to learn his letters to investors. At that time, I thought that as the most successful investor in the world, Buffett must be the smartest person in the world.

Later, when I went to Harvard to study for the MBA, Buffett came to our school twice to give lectures and give lectures. Each time I listened carefully and had the privilege of getting in close contact with him. I was really shocked by the rustic quality he showed.

After returning to China to set up the Huitianfu Fund, I studied Buffett's articles and letters more deeply, and attended Buffett's annual shareholder meeting twice. Our colleague Liu Jianwei is a famous Buffett research expert in the industry, who gave me a lot of help and guidance. Interestingly, in the process of studying and learning from Buffett, I saw more and more the shadow of Guo Jing and Forrest Gump from Buffett.

It can be seen from an example. When I first went on a pilgrimage to Omaha, there was a big advertisement at Omaha airport with a big picture of a young and handsome Buffett. The advertisement is made by the University of Nablaska, who is promoting herself as a very good school, arguing that Buffett graduated from this university as an undergraduate. Of course, compared with the really good American universities, the University of Nabraska is a big gap-according to Forbes, it is only 247. It is clear that the young Buffett is not a prominent child in the secular education system.

But Buffett, like Guo Jing and Forrest Gump, has excellent human qualities.He is, first of all, an extremely simple man. His investment concept and method are very simple and have never changed since they were formed. Every time he goes to his shareholders' meeting, he says something similar, but miraculously, it doesn't sound verbose at all.His life is very simple. He still lives in the house he bought for $31500 in 1958, drives a Cadillac and eats his favorite steak since childhood.

Secondly, he is an extremely tough man. As Buffett's daughter Susie said, "my father has his own internal evaluation criteria, which are never influenced by others." He is a genius in character, with unparalleled ability to think independently, to focus on work and to be undisturbed by the outside world.

Third, he is a man of integrity and selflessness. He donated most of his fortune and donated it to the Bill Gates Foundation, not even the foundation that bears his name.

4. The unity of the three

It was not until I was forty that I realized that Guo Jing, Forrest Gump and Buffett were all of the same kind of people. When they were young, they shaped the qualities of very good people, that is, simplicity, integrity, lack of selfishness and perseverance.

Their success is by no means the result of being clever, faster, higher and stronger than others. On the contrary, it is the result of being simpler, simpler and more tenacious than others.

This is what Jin Yong said of Guo Jing: chasing girls is best unpretentious. Ouyangke used so many tricks to chase Huang Rong that it was better for Guo Jing to buy a meal.

Forrest Gump's life confirms one of its lines: Stupid is as stupid does, stupid people do stupid things, or: stupid people have stupid blessings, which interestingly confirms the consistency between the East and the West in acting like fools.

In the fast-changing capital market, there are too many smart and responsive talents, but people like Buffett are rare. You can leave the market for a few years without using a computer, not touching stocks that you don't understand even if others make a lot of money, and when you're not optimistic about the market. This has gone far beyond investment technology and skills, more like a child-like natural simplicity and human calmness and tenacity.

If we look around history and look around the world, we will find that this is true of truly successful and happy people. Whether it is Kazuo Inamori, Jobs, or Wang Yangming and Zeng Guofan in Chinese history, they can succeed because of their simplicity, integrity, lack of selfishness and perseverance.

Up to now, I can understand that Thomas Jefferson said that "every generation needs a new revolution". First of all, it means that each generation needs to complete its own revolution and make its own personal character truly excellent. It was only in the era to which he belonged that he seized the opportunity of the times to make efforts for the progress of the country and society and for the happiness of others.

It can be seen that life is really a spiritual practice! As Kazuo Inamori said, no matter how rich and powerful people are, when life ends, everything can only stay in the world, and only the soul will follow you on the next journey. Life is not a material feast, but a spiritual practice that makes it nobler at the curtain call than at the beginning of the opening.

This is our revolution and the fundamental purpose of our lives!
