The Australian Labour Supervisory Authority announced on Monday that it has sued the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), the country's largest bank, and its brokerage subsidiaries for delinquiring about 16.4 million Australian dollars in salary arrears to more than 7,000 employees.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia said in a statement that issues relating to unpaid wages date back to 2010. The bank reported itself to the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) in early 2019, and the remedies have largely been completed. Since then, the bank and its brokerage subsidiary CommSec have improved their systems and processes.
The FWO alleges the Commonwealth Bank of Australia failed to ensure that its employees' wages were not lower than the required overall minimum allowance, and that the bank did not make up for any shortages.
More and more companies in Australia are involved in wage arrears scandals. A few months before the Commonwealth Bank of Australia was sued, the country's largest supermarket chain, Woolworths Group (Woolworths Group), was also sued by FWO for defaulting on employees' wages.
