New California law: All light autonomous vehicles must achieve zero emissions by 2030

Sina Tech News reported on the morning of September 26, Beijing time. According to reports, starting in 2030, the US state of California will require all light autonomous vehicles operating in the state to achieve zero emissions.

The SB 500 bill signed by the state's governor Gavin Newsom (Gavin Newsom) on Thursday became official law. This action represents California's latest effort to limit sales of new internal combustion locomotives, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2020, Newson signed an executive order aimed at banning the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035. In the same year, the state's Air Resources Commission stipulated that all new trucks sold in California must have zero emissions by 2045.

Prashanthi Raman (Prashanthi Raman), head of global government affairs at Cruise, said in a statement: “We are very grateful to California for its leadership in this regard. They have ensured that zero-emission vehicles will become the industry standard. The autonomous driving industry is poised to play a leading role in reducing urban greenhouse gas emissions, which is why we have been operating an all-electric, zero-emission fleet since the beginning.” Cruise supports SB 500 by participating in the Zero Emissions Alliance, which also includes automated delivery startup Nuro.

According to data from the US EPA, the transportation sector has been the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US since 2019, with light vehicles accounting for more than half of production. However, autonomous vehicles currently only make up a small portion of the nearly 15 million cars on California's roads.

Additionally, Cruise and Waymo are two of the most famous companies testing fully autonomous vehicles in California, and their fleets are almost entirely electric and hybrid. California's latest move is to prevent autonomous vehicles from becoming a major source of pollution in the future, particularly after autonomous taxis become a mainstream service in future commuting.
