Japanese and South Korean stock markets opened higher on Monday, with the Nikkei 225 index rising 0.82% to 27867.60. South Korea's KOSPI index opened up 0.94% at 3163.47.

The US stock market hit a record high on Friday, and Federal Reserve Chairman Colin Powell's remarks convinced investors that the stimulus would be withdrawn in a gradual manner.

S & P 500 and NASDAQThe 100 index rose after Powell stressed at the Jackson Hole seminar that it would be more appropriate to start tapering bond purchases before the end of the year. Powell said inflation had made "substantial further progress" towards the Fed's goals and that there had been "significant progress" in the labour market.

As he spoke, a closely watched indicator of inflation remained high, suggesting that while the Delta strain threatened the economic recovery, there was still reason to normalise monetary policy.

"Powell's speech indicates that the Fed will tighten monetary policy in a more moderate and market-friendly way, which makes investors breathe a sigh of relief," said Mike Bailey, head of research at FBB Capital Partners. "judging from the performance of the stock market, I think the view of mainstream investors is that the Fed will cut its weight in the autumn and raise interest rates again at the end of next year or early 2023."

In his speech, Powell drew a clear line between asset purchases and interest rate adjustment, saying that he would not rush to raise interest rates after starting to reduce the size.

Jeffery Elswick, head of fixed income at Frost Investment Advisors, who expects the Fed to announce a cut in September, said: "I'm pretty sure they will officially slow down their bond purchases in October, but as long as they continue to take a super-dovish stance on future interest rate hikes, then the market won't react much, at least not initially."

By the close, the S & P 500 was up 0.9% at 4509.37; Dow JonesThe industrial average rose 0.7% to 35455.8, the NASDAQ rose 1.2% to 15129.5, the NASDAQ rose 1% to 15432.95, and the Russell 2000 rose 2.9% to 2277.151.
