Walmart Inc, the largest retailer in the United StatesIt was announced on Tuesday that it will launch a distribution service called GoLocal to help other retailers deliver goods to consumers. This is the company's latest move to expand its non-retail business.
Walmart Inc said the service will be operational by the end of this year, and distribution methods will include new technologies, such as self-driving cars and drones.
Walmart Inc said GoLocal will be a "white-label" service, which means delivery will not be carried out by Walmart Inc-branded vehicles. The company said it would offer delivery within two hours at a competitive price, as well as the option of two-day delivery. Delivery will be handled jointly by associates, odd workers and other delivery companies.
Walmart Inc is currently working with FedEx CorpCooperate for online package delivery. The company did not say on Tuesday whether FedEx Corp would be used by GoLocal.
However, Tom Ward, senior vice-president of Walmart Inc's "last mile" business, said the company would work with innovative distribution partners, including Cruise, a self-driving electric car start-up that Walmart Inc invested in last year, as well as Waymo and Nuro. Drone delivery will also be a priority, with partners including DroneUP, another company Walmart Inc invested in last year, as well as ZipLine and FlyTrex.
