As of midnight local time on January 1, 2025, Bulgaria and Romania have officially fully joined the Schengen Area, and there will no longer be border checks for land travel to and from the Schengen Area. To accommodate this change, the Romanian National Road Infrastructure Company announced a series of measures and closed some border crossings. By March 31, 2024, Bulgaria and Romania partially joined the Schengen Area. Schengen Area countries have eliminated control over the air and sea borders of the two countries. However, land border checks are still required for travel between these two countries and Schengen Area countries. In June 1985, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg signed an agreement in the town of Schengen in Luxembourg to create the Schengen Area, aiming to allow free movement of people and goods between countries and promote the process of European integration.
